Srinagar, September 04 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the family members of illegally detained Hurriyat leader, Sarjan Barkati, along with dozens of relatives and neighbours staged a protest at Press Enclave in Srinagar, today, against his continued detention.

Sarjan Barkati earned the sobriquet of ‘pied piper’ of Kashmir for his speeches and peculiar method of sloganeering that attracted large crowds during the mass uprising, triggered by extrajudicial killing of popular youth leader, Burhan Wani, in 2016. He was arrested on October 01 that year.

The protesters demanded the release of Sarjan Barkati as the family’s survival has become difficult without a bread earner.

Sarjan Barkati’s wife, Shabroza Barkati, who had travelled to Press Enclave in Srinagar from her home in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, along with her relatives and neighbours, said that her family was facing hardships in the absence of her husband.

“We are facing huge hardships in his (Barkati’s) absence. We have no one to look after us in his absence. My children are not able to focus on their studies so they have stopped going to school. I mostly remain busy in courts to seek bail for my husband,” she said during the demonstration.

Sarjan Barkati’s daughter, Sughra Barkati said that they were not able to concentrate on their studies because of the trauma as their father was languishing in jail for past two years.
