Sehrai, others denounce mass arrests in IOK » Kashmir Media Service

Srinagar, February 26: In occupied Kashmir, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir Chairman, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai has said that the brazen display of mass arrests of socio-political and religious leadership and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat workers is a well-designed conspiracy to pave the way for stoking further uncertainty in the territory.

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai in a statement issued in Srinagar said, it is Delhi’s inflexibility that is responsible for the present crisis in occupied Kashmir. He said defending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was not confined to a particular region or religion anymore as the people of the entire Jammu and Kashmir have realized its importance and sanctity. “But New Delhi wants to influence the upcoming general elections by raising the issue of Article 35-A and creating a war hysteria for electoral gains.”

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai said, the Indian authorities flout their own law and legal procedures, crossing all limits of lawlessness. He termed it as a political vendetta and the sheer frustration on part of the occupation authorities. “It is strange that a country which propagates itself as the proponent of democratic values is so inhuman and cruel in dealing with people demanding their political and fundamental rights.”

He said, “Force and intimidation will only worsen the already deteriorated situation in Kashmir, as such acts have always been a tool of the rulers to try and force the people and leadership into submission,” he added. These acts, he said, deserve all forms of condemnation.

Sehrai appealed to the international agencies and organizations of human rights to take cognizance of unabated arrests in the territory. He said, “It is ironical that the space for the political dissent is being choked to the extent of enormous suffocation. We are not allowed to express our legitimate political demand.”

“We are being prevented to reach out to masses,” he said, adding that the height was that whosoever raised the voice against repression and called for early resolution of the Kashmir dispute was booked under charges of sedition and draconian laws.

Hurriyat leaders Shabbir Ahmad Dar, Mushtaq-ul-Islam, Anjuman Sharie Shian, Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League and Kashmir Centre for Social and Development Studies in their separate statements also castigated India for launching undeclared psychological, military, media and constitutional offensive against the entire populace in the occupied territory. They said people reserve the right to resent these arbitrary measures.
