Urges people to stay away from polling process

Srinagar, April 04 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the Hurriyat forum led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq terming the upcoming so-called Indian Parliamentary elections in the territory as a futile exercise has urged the people to stay away from the polling process as it can in no way help in resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

The Hurriyat forum reiterated that the lingering Kashmir dispute is a political and human issue that needs to be resolved in its historical perspective for the lasting peace in occupied Kashmir and the entire region.

A forum spokesman in a statement issued in Srinagar said that the Kashmiri people and the resistance leadership had repeatedly been urging New Delhi to resolve the lingering dispute peacefully through dialogue among the stakeholders – India, Pakistan and the people of Kashmir – but after the Pulwama incident, the Indian repression in the occupied territory had increased. He pointed out that occupied Kashmir had been converted into a military garrison and an atmosphere of fear had been created to intimidate the people.

The spokesman said that massive repression had been unleashed on ground against the people of the occupied territory. “Instilling fear and intimidation among people is at full display. Custodial killing is back. Resistance and religious leaders and youth are being arrested and shifted to jails outside the Kashmir valley and slapped with Draconian Public Safety Act (PSA). Frequent cordon and search operations (CASOs) are launched across Kashmir. NIA (National Investigation Agency) and ED (Enforcement Directorate) are being used to harass and intimidate the resistance leaders and their family members. There is ban on peaceful protests and even seminars organised to honor our dear are not allowed. Unabated killings continue and the infamous operation “all-out” is being carried out with full force while people of Kashmir are shouldering the coffins of their loved ones,” he said.

On the other hand, the spokesman said, there is an all-out attempt to tinker with Article 35-A and Article 370 of the Indian Constitution to change the demography of Jammu and Kashmir and its disputed character. It is people’s strong resistance that is preventing the Indian rulers from undoing these articles, he added.

The statement said that at a time when leadership had been lodged in jails and confined to their own homes, every segment of society had to play its part to contribute towards the ongoing liberation struggle by remaining steadfast and united. People have to have faith that their supreme sacrifices and patience will be rewarded as there is no other option other than resolution of the lingering Kashmir dispute, it added.

Meanwhile, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq termed the closing down of Kashmir highway for two days in a week as dictatorial asking the authorities to withdraw the decision. He said the order is aimed at punishing people and it will cause great distress.

On the other hand, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front in a statement issued in Srinagar said that elections under Indian occupation were detrimental to the interests of Kashmiris and hence “deserve a total rejection and boycott from us.” This was stated by Abdul Hameed Butt, the acting chairman of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) in a statement issued in Srinagar to media, toady.
