Srinagar, April 16 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, senior APHC leader and the Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, has condemned the ill-treatment meted out to the Kashmiri detainees at the hands of the authorities in Srinagar Central Jail.

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai in a statement issued in Srinagar said, “The jail authorities have made the life of Kashmiri prisoners miserable.” He said as per the reports, the behaviour of the jail authorities has become more aggressive since an incident took place inside the jail two weeks ago.

Ashraf Sehrai said the jail authorities are not only violating the international covenants, but also the fundamental and constitutional rights of the prisoners. “A jailed person is not deprived of his fundamental or constitutional rights. He is entitled to every basic facility as per the jail manual,” he added.

The TeH Chairman asked the authorities to provide suitable treatment and facilities to all prisoners and ensure their relatives get proper access to meet them without any hindrance. He said proper medical aid and other facilities should be provided to the inmates as per the jail manual. He said, “The detainees are subjected to political vengeance. The authorities even ignore the ruling of Supreme Court regarding prisoners’ rights.”
