Torture on bakarwal community members denounced

Srinagar, May 07 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League has condemned the ill-treatment meted out to Kashmiri prisoners in Udhampur, Kot Bhalwal, Kathu and other jails, saying that they are subjected to mental and physical torture.

A JKML spokesman in a statement issued in Srinagar said that prisoners are being harassed in the jails of Kashmir and outside.

“Jail authorities are torturing the inmates mentally and physically, and there are reports that animal like treatment is given to the Kashmiri prisoners,” he said.

The JKML said non-local prisoners who are in jails from the past 10-15 years have been recently shifted from Srinagar Central Jail to Kot Bhalwal, Udhampur, Kathua and other jails, are kept in narrow cells and denied their basic rights. “They are forced to work in garden. In case they refuse they are tortured and beaten ruthlessly.”

The spokesman appealed to the United Nations, Amnesty International, Asia Watch and OIC to monitor and see the pathetic and inhuman treatment meted out to these political prisoners in occupied Kashmir and pressurize India to stop this inhuman and undemocratic attitude towards the detainees.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Anjuman Seerat Committee Chairman, Maulana Abdul Qayyum Matto in a statement issued in Kishtwar strongly condemned the inhuman torture on members of bakarwal community by Indian troops, the other day. He said a few days ago, the troops also tortured a local Muhammad Ayub without any reason. He said in Kishtwar Indian army is working on the instructions of BJP leaders.

On the other hand, the representatives of Jammu and Kashmir Socio Economic Coordination Committee (JKSECC), an umbrella body of various trade organisations, addressing a press conference in Srinagar expressed concern at the business scenario in Kashmir valley. They said that an unprecedented situation had arisen due to frequent closure of the Kashmir highway, the only stretch of road connecting the valley with the rest of the world.
