Protesters subjected to force, several injured

Srinagar, May 10 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, Indian troops in their fresh act of state terrorism martyred one Kashmiri youth in Shopian district, today.

The troops martyred the youth, Ishfaq Ahmed Sofi, during a cordon and search operation in Amishpora area of the district.

Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed in Sopore town against the killing of Ishfaq Ahmed Sofi with all shops and business establishments remaining closed and transport off the road. The occupation authorities suspended internet services and ordered closure of all educational institutions including colleges and higher secondary schools in Sopore. Youth took to the streets in Model town area of Sopore, the native place of Ishfaq, to protest his killing. Indian forces fired scores of teargas shells to quell the protests.

Youth took to the streets soon after the culmination of Juma prayers, today, at historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of Srinagar and staged anti-India demonstrations. Indian police and troops fired pellets and teargas shells to disperse the protesters, injuring several of them. Six youth were hit by pellets.

Indian troops and police personnel arrested three brothers during a raid in the wee hours, today, at Cherawani near Charar-e-Sharief area of Badgam district. The arrestees were identified as Muzaffar Ahmed Dar, Irfan Ahmed Dar and Touseef Ahmed Dar.

A woman was killed and twelve other persons were injured when a minibus skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Sokar area of Rajouri district. Two youth died due to drowning in the water at Birmah Nallah in Udhampur. A dead body was recovered at Galandar in Pampore area of Pulwama district.

Thousands of vehicles including trucks remain stranded on Srinagar-Jammu Highway, which is closed for the second consecutive day, today, due to landslides at various places. The road closure has resulted in the loss of millions of rupees to the traders.

In London, the Kashmiri diaspora leadership headed by Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo held a press conference highlighting the urgency that the international community should forestall Narendra Modi-led BJP’s plan to convert Muslim majority in occupied Kashmir into a Hindu majority. Barrister Tramboo quoting figures from Kashmir Media Service revealed that during the five-year rule of BJP in New Delhi, Indian troops had killed 1,352 Kashmiris including 31 women and 120 children. He said that of those 109 were killed in custody while 14 persons were subjected to custodial disappearance. Through a PowerPoint presentation, he briefed the media that BJP is running election campaign through both electronic and print media throughout India with the promise of granting land in occupied Kashmir to those who cast their vote in favour of the party.
