New Delhi, May 27 (KMS): The Assam Rifles, a central Indian paramilitary force that guards India’s border with Myanmar, will soon have a presence in occupied Kashmir in the garb of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) as New Delhi has approved the deployment.

A recent Indian government order issued by the Home Ministry said the Assam Rifles will have new battalions to be based in Jammu and Kashmir.

Established in 1835 as a militia called the ‘Cachar Levy’, the paramilitary force today has strength of about 47,000 personnel.

The Assam Rifles draws its strength of officers from the Indian army and functions under the command of the Indian Home Ministry.
