Srinagar, May 30 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown is being observed in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, today, to commemorate the 10th martyrdom anniversary of Aasiya and Neelofar.

Call for the shutdown has been given by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani. All the shops, business establishments and educational institutes are closed in the area while traffic is off the road.

Aasiya (17) and her sister-in-law Neelofar (22) abducted after they had gone to tend their orchard on May 29, 2009, and were gang-raped and subsequently murdered by the Indian men in uniform. Their dead bodies were recovered from shallow Rambi Ara stream in the area on the morning of May 30 in 2009. The incident had led to forceful anti-India demonstrations across occupied Kashmir.

The shutdown is also aimed at registering protest against the killing of a civilian, Sajjad Ahmed Parray, by Indian troops in Pinjoora area of the district, yesterday.

Sajjad Ahmed Parray was killed and over forty people were injured when the troops fired bullets, pellets and teargas shells on the demonstrators, who were protesting against a cordon and search operation by the Indian forces in the area.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Muslim Khawateen Markaz, Yasmeen Raja in a statement issued in Srinagar paid glowing tributes to Aasiya and Neelofar on their 10th martyrdom anniversary. She deplored that despite the passage of a decade, the culprits of the Shopian tragedy were not yet punished.
