Shutdown in Kargil against abrogation of IOK’s special status

Kargil, August 28 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown was observed, today, in the entire Kargil district to protest against the BJP-led Indian government’s decision to scrap special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate it into two union territories.

The shutdown is also aimed to demand the release of political prisoners and to restore communication services in occupied Kashmir.

All business establishments, schools, government and private offices remained closed in Kargil, Sankoo, Suru and Drass areas of the district.

Call for the two-day shutdown beginning from today was given by Joint Action Committee (JAC), Kargil comprising all religious and political parties in the district after it held a meeting with Coordination Committee, Drass, yesterday.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Coordination Committee Drass has already rejected the UT status for Ladakh region and demanded to keep the region with Jammu and Kashmir. This demand was also endorsed by JAC, Kargil, during the meeting with Drass representatives.
