US Congressional Caucus to convene hearing on Kashmir » Kashmir Media Service

Washington, November 12 (KMS): A US Congressional Caucus on human rights will hold a hearing this week on the situation in occupied Kashmir following India’s decision to revoke special status of the territory.

Announcing the hearing, the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission said that the witnesses would examine the human rights situation in Kashmir in the context of the region’s history and larger patterns of rights violations. It said that the witnesses would offer recommendations for action by Congress.

The Commission has invited Anurima Bhargava, Commissioner, US Commission on International Religious Freedom, as witness in the first panel for the hearing on Wednesday (November 13).

The announcement of the hearing by the Lantos Committee comes on the heels of a similar hearing last month on occupied Kashmir by a Congressional subcommittee on the Asia and Pacific. Several US Congressmen had expressed concern over the situation in occupied Kashmir.
