Pays tributes to Sopore martyrs
Srinagar, January 05 (KMS): The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Syed Ali Gilani, while commenting on the resolution passed on 5th January 1949 regarding the Kashmiri people’s right to choose their fate, has said that despite facing unprecedented levels of oppression the people of occupied Kashmir are sacrificing their lives to end the decades long India’s illegal hold of their territory.

In a statement issued in Srinagar, today, Syed Ali Gilani said that the Right to Self Determination Day is being observed by the people of Jammu and Kashmir on the both sides of the ceasefire line as a reminder to the international community including the United Nations of its commitment to provide Kashmiris their basic right.
He said that even after over seven decades the Jan 5 resolution passed in the UN Security Council in 1949 provides a peaceful and durable solution for the long-standing Kashmir dispute. He said that India could not deny the legitimacy and authenticity of the UN resolutions that formed the basis of the Kashmir dispute and guaranteed its peaceful settlement as per the Kashmiris’ aspirations. He regretted that the UN has failed to implement its own resolution, urging the international community to play its role in ensuring basic rights including the right of self-determination to the oppressed Kashmiris.

Gilani also paid rich tributes to the martyrs and victims of Sopore massacre. Pertinently, 57 innocent Kashmiris were martyred and over 400 structures including houses and shops were set ablaze by Indian troops on January 6, 1993 in Sopore town. He reminded international human rights organisations to probe the Sopore massacre and other gross human rights violations by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir. He said that India continues to unleash state terrorism and violate basic human rights of the innocent Kashmiris because of the criminal silence being maintained by the global community including the UN over New Delhi’s crimes against the people of Kashmir.

He asked international organizations meant to safeguard human rights and promote peace in the world to stand up for the subjugated people of occupied Kashmir at a time when Indian regime led by Narendra Modi is making every effort to change the disputed status of J&K and bring about a demographic change through ethnic cleansing of Muslims and later settling non-Kashmiris there. Syed Ali Gilani said that New Delhi’s August 5, 2019 illegal and unilateral actions stand witness to this.

On the illegal detention of thousands of Kashmiri prisoners languishing in jails in and outside occupied Kashmir, the APHC chairman said that Indian authorities continue to abuse and violate rights of the Kashmiri prisoners by placing them in worst living conditions inside jails. Gilani lamented these prisoners are even deprived of basic rights like medical care and judicial help. This mistreatment and abuse of the Kashmiri prisoners is part of India’s aggressive and repressive policy against the Kashmiris, he added.

While slamming the international human rights bodies for their silence and negligence over the mistreatment of the Kashmiri prisoners, Syed Ali Gilani once again reminded them of their professional and moral commitment and responsibilities in this regard. He urged them to come forward and held India accountable for its crimes in occupied Kashmir.
