JNU students union president, among many injured

New Delhi, January 06 (KMS): Armed with hammers, rods, draggers, sticks and stones, the goons associated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party broke into Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, last evening, brutally assaulting students and teachers and damaging property with the Delhi police fully supporting the attackers.

Videos of students and teachers being attacked by the goons wielding sticks, hammers and rods and stones surfaced around 7 pm. The attackers started beating whosever came in their way. Dozens of the injured students, including 30 critically, were admitted to the hospitals in Delhi. JNU Students’ Union President Aishe Ghosh is also among the injured students. JNU Registrar issued a statement asking the JNU community to be alert.

“There is a law and order situation on the JNU campus. Masked miscreants armed with sticks are roaming around damaging property and attacking people…,” university registrar said.

A full-blown political war broke out between the Congress and the BJP. Dormer Congress chief Rahul Gandhi blamed the violence on “fascist forces in control of the nation”. Rahul Gandhi said: “The brutal attack on JNU students and teachers by masked thugs that has left many seriously injured is shocking. The fascists in control of our nation are afraid of the voices of our brave students. Today’s JNU violence is a reflection of that fear.”

The Congress top brass — P Chidambaram, Anand Sharma, RS Surjewala and KC Venugopal — pinned violence on the government with Chidamaram noting, “If this is happening on live TV, it is an act of impunity and can only happen with the support of the government. This is beyond belief.”

CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury termed the violence as a “planned attack by those in power which is afraid of the resistance provided by JNU to its Hindutva agenda” and said reports pointed to collusion between the administration and ABVP goons to inflict violence on students and teachers.
