Srinagar, May 30 (KMS): In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, a freelance photojournalist, based in Pulwama, was harassed by the Indian forces’ personnel when he was on way to cover a military operation in Shopian’s Ganapora village on Friday.

The journalist, Irshad Reshi in a statement in Srinagar said that his phone and camera were seized by the forces’ personnel after being stopped near the operation site. He said that he told them that he was a journalist going to cover the operation but they refused to give any permission.

He said that as soon as he was about to leave the spot, an army officer arrived and told his guards to take his mobile phone and camera. He said, he was then told to report at a police station in Shopian for his belongings. On reaching the police station he was made to sign a document and only then the mobile phone and camera was given back to him, the journalist added.

Irshad, who works for different regional and Delhi-based media organizations, said that he had been in the field since 2017 but had not witnessed such harassment earlier.

Meanwhile, Pulwama Journalists Federation (PJF) spokesman in a statement condemning harassment of the photojournalist said that the attack comes when journalists are risking their lives amid the pandemic to keep the public informed.

Srinagar, May 30 (KMS): In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, social and health workers staged a protest against the anti-people policies of the authorities in Zachaldara and Handwara areas of Kupwara district.

The protesting workers associated with Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) said that they had been rendering their services efficiently for almost a decade now without any regular and adequate salary.

They said that besides their overburdened assignments, their services were being utilised to deal with Covid-19 pandemic for the past one year with a meager amount of Rs 1000.

“We want the administration to increase our remuneration to Rs 21,000 so that we can fulfill our basic needs,” they said.

“Although we used to get some incentives on Eid, this year we were deprived of those incentives too,” said Beenish Akhtar of Laribal Rajwar.

They sought immediate intervention of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and demanded their services be regularised with monthly renumeration of Rs 21,000.

Srinagar, May 30 (KMS): In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu Kashmir Employees Movement (JKEM) has said that in the garb of corona pandemic India has made the life of the people of Kashmir more miserable.

The JKEM spokesman in a statement issued in Srinagar said that Narendra Modi-led fascist Indian government had been thirsty of the blood of Kashmiris and it was constantly targeting the innocent people of the occupied territory.

He deplored that Hurriyat leaders had been put in jails of India and the territory while senior APHC leader, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai was killed in custody in the Indian jail. He said, coronavirus is spreading rapidly in India, while most of the Hurriyat leadership was languishing in New Delhi’s Tihar jail and no one is not allowed to meet them.

The spokesman said that Kashmiri political prisoners in Indian jails are not provided medical facilities which he termed the worst kind of human rights violation.

He appealed to the world community to take notice of Indian state terrorism in IIOJK and play role in resolving the Kashmir dispute according to the United Nations resolutions. He also welcomed the recent statement of the United Nations General Assembly about Kashmir.

Hanoi, May 30 (KMS): Vietnam has discovered a new COVID-19 variant which spreads quickly by air and is a combination of the strains first found in India and Britain, health officials have confirmed.

The country is struggling to deal with fresh outbreaks across more than half of its territory, including industrial zones and big cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

More than 6,800 cases including 47 deaths have been reported in Vietnam, with the lion’s share occurring since April.

“We have discovered a new hybrid variant from the strains first found in Indian and the UK,” Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long told a national meeting on the pandemic Saturday, according to state media.

“The characteristic of this strain is that it spreads quickly in the air. The concentration of virus in the throat fluid increases rapidly and spreads very strongly to the surrounding environment.”

He did not specify the number of cases recorded with this new variant but said Vietnam will soon announce the discovery in the world’s map of genetic strains.

Vietnam’s Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology said in a statement Saturday that its scientists had detected gene mutations in four out of 32 patient samples through gene sequencing.

There were seven known coronavirus variants in Vietnam before Long’s announcement, according to the Ministry of Health.

The country has previously received widespread applause for its aggressive pandemic response, with mass quarantines and strict contact tracing helping keep infection rates relatively low.

The new round of infections has made the public and government fearful and authorities have quickly moved to place strict limits on movement and business activity.

Cafes, restaurants, hair salons and massage parlours as well as tourism and religious spots have been ordered to close in various areas of the country.

Vietnam — a country of 97 million people — has vaccinated a little over a million citizens.

It is now ramping up its jab rollout and hopes to achieve herd immunity by the end of the year, according to the health minister.

Authorities have called on people and businesses to donate money to help procure vaccines, while embassies and international organisations have been contacted for assistance, state media reported.

The country presently has close to two million doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine remaining, but said it is buying more than 30 million doses of the Pfizer shot.

It is also in talks with Russia to produce Sputnik V, according to state media, and is working on a home-grown vaccine.

In nearby Thailand, the government on Saturday took exception to media reports in Britain that labelled a new strain causing concern there as the “Thai variant”.

The strain was first detected in Thailand in a 33-year-old Egyptian traveller, UK health authorities said, but 109 cases have since been found in Britain.

Comments
“Principally speaking, it should not be called the Thai variant because the infected person is from overseas,” said Opas Kankawinpong, head of Thailand’s disease control department.

Srinagar, May 30 (KMS): In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) has urged the authorities to issue guidelines for unlocking as the Covid cases are showing downtrend and the economy is in dire straits.

The KEA Chairman, Muhammad Yaseen Khan speaking at a function organized to deliberate on strategies for Kashmir’s economy to move forward amid pandemic, said that there was need to ease out lockdown as cases and deaths attributed to Covid had come down.

“At this point of time we are not talking about any compensation or revival package as the losses are still piling up, but what we want is a breather from the government that if the situation is improving , the genuine concern of the business sector must be kept in mind,” he said.

He added that there was a dire need for a revival package for all segments of the economy who are suffering. “KEA will come up with a whitepaper on it separately. But our function was to deliberate on the future course of action which was attended by our districts heads, prominent industrialist, Muhammad Ashraf Mir and members of Transporters Welfare Association led by Shabbir Matta.”

Muhammad Yaseen Khan said that the KEA would ensure implementation of all Covid appropriate behavior at workplaces, adding that Kashmir economy was bleeding losses from the past three years and there was need to help it come out of financial quagmire.

Srinagar, May 23 (KMS): In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) has warned against the irrational use of steroids in Covid-19 patients.

The DAK President and influenza expert Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan in a statement issued in Srinagar said, “Indiscriminate use of steroids can trigger deadly black fungal infection, called mucormycosis which has reached to epidemic proportions in several states of India”.

He said, steroids are life-saving drugs in severe Covid patients who have respiratory distress or need oxygen or ventilation. They are not indicated for those patients who are not having respiratory distress and are not having any kind of need for oxygen, he added.

He said recovery trial in the UK showed that steroids reduce the mortality in severe Covid-19 patients but it increase the mortality when given to patients with mild disease. “We are seeing steroids being prescribed to patients with mild Covid disease,” Dr Nisar said. He said the recovery trial recommends that steroids should be given for 10 days and at a lower dose but much higher doses are given and for a longer duration

The DAK President said Covid-19 is a biphasic illness. The first week of Covid is the viral replication phase. That is not when you should be using steroids. “It is in the later stages (second week) steroids are to be given to counter the body’s hyper-inflammatory response what is widely referred to as cytokine storm,” he said.

“Chances of fungal infection increase in those Covid patients who are diabetic and are taking steroids,” he said, adding “One way to stall the possibility of the fungal infection is to make sure that Covid patients are given steroids at the right dose, at the right time and for the right duration.” “So far, India has reported over 8,800 cases of black fungus and more than 200 people have died due to this deadly disease,” said Dr Nisar.
