DHC directs CBI probe into death of Muslim man beaten, forced to sing national anthem by Police

New Delhi: Delhi HC orders CBI probe into death of Muslim man beaten by police during 2020 Delhi riots

New Delhi, July 23: The Delhi High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation into the death of Faizan, a 23-year-old man who was beaten by Delhi Police officers during the 2020 Delhi anti-Muslim riots.

According to Kashmir Media Service, a viral video circulated on social media showed police officers striking Faizan with sticks and forcing him to sing the Indian anthem.

Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued the order to transfer the case from Delhi Police to the CBI, today, following a plea by Faizan’s mother, Kismatun. She contended that Faizan was brutally assaulted by officers at Kardampuri and then illegally detained at Jyoti Nagar Police Station, where he was denied medical attention, leading to his death.

Kismatun’s plea called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and a court-monitored investigation into the incident and the role of the police officials involved.

Advocate Vrinda Grover, representing Kismatun, argued that the Delhi Police’s investigation into Faizan’s death was biased and failed to scrutinize the actions of the Station House Officer (SHO) at Jyoti Nagar, where the assault occurred.

In response, the Delhi Police informed the High Court that the investigation was ongoing but delayed due to the need for forensic examination of certain videos and evidence.
