Rights group files complaint against Assam CM Sarma for anti-Muslim speeches
New Delhi: Activists from a civil rights group in Jharkhand have lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for making hate speeches against Muslims during a recent election rally in Jamshedpur.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Loktrantra Bachao Abhiyan submitted the complaint to Ananya Mittal, the district election officer of East Singhbhum, regarding Sarma’s remarks made on October 24 in Bishtupur. The complaint accuses the BJP leader of inciting violence and polarizing voters along religious lines.
Specifically, Sarma’s speech included inflammatory comments about “kicking out Babur,” a reference viewed as derogatory towards Muslims, and suggested that demographic changes in Jamshedpur are linked to a perceived threat from Muslim communities.
The complainants argue that Sarma’s rhetoric promotes communalism and incites violence, constituting a gross violation of the model code of conduct. They have requested the registration of an FIR against Sarma and urged the Election Commission to prohibit him from participating in further election rallies in the district.
This is not the first complaint against Sarma; the group had previously filed a similar complaint following an election rally in Palamu on October 23, citing violations of the model code of conduct.
