4.5 magnitude earthquake jolts Leh

Leh: A mild earthquake jolted the Leh area of Ladakh region of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, causing brief panic among residents.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the tremor, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, struck at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface, India’s National Centre for Seismology said.

Officials said the quake, though short in duration, was noticeable across several parts of Leh and adjoining areas, prompting people to rush out of their homes and workplaces as buildings shook lightly for a few seconds.

Authorities confirmed that no loss of life or property damage has been reported so far. “Preliminary assessments indicate that the situation remains under control,” an official from the district disaster management unit stated.
