Three Indians dead, five missing as boat capsizes off Mozambique coast

New Delhi: At least three Indian nationals died and five others went missing after a boat carrying 14 crew members capsized off the Beira port in Mozambique, the Indian High Commission in Maputo confirmed.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred during what officials described as a routine transfer of crew members to a tanker anchored off the port. The boat overturned suddenly, though the exact cause of the mishap remains unclear. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the accident.

The Indian Mission in Mozambique said search and rescue operations are underway in coordination with local authorities. “A Consular Officer from the Mission is in Beira and has visited the Indian national who survived the unfortunate boat mishap and is receiving medical attention in hospital,” the High Commission said in a statement.

It is worth mentioning here that in view of rising unemployment and poverty at home, many Indians continue to seek work abroad, often taking up risky maritime and offshore jobs.
