Jailed Hurriyat leader Mushtaq-ul-Islam admitted to Jammu hospital

Srinagar: Senior Hurriyat leader Mushtaq-ul- Islam, who has been detained for an extended period in Kot Bhalwal Jail, Jammu, has been admitted to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Jammu after his health deteriorated.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Mushtaq-ul-Islam has been suffering from multiple health complications, reportedly caused by prolonged medical negligence in custody. He has been experiencing high blood sugar levels, deteriorating eyesight, and general weakness, which led to his transfer to the hospital.

Reports from within Kot Bhalwal Jail indicate that the facility has only one doctor—a gynecologist, Dr Polly Thappa—who has been posted there for the past ten years. The prison lacks qualified male physicians and specialist doctors, a situation that has contributed to the worsening health conditions of detainees. The medical care is being deliberately withheld from inmates, raising serious concerns about human rights violations.

APHC spokesperson Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas in a statement in Srinagar said the APHC has consistently raised concerns about the treatment of Kashmiri detainees. He said that the Indian authorities were denying inmates basic medical and legal facilities, which had resulted in severe health complications and, in some cases, deaths in custody.
