India’s influence significantly impacting Nepal’s 2026 general elections

Islamabad: India is using its financial influence and logistical “assistance” to shape the electoral landscape in favour of parties aligned with Indian interests, particularly the Nepali Congress, widely viewed as pro-India, raising serious questions about the integrity of the democratic process.

According to Kashmir Media Service, while India claims to be supporting Nepal’s Election Commission through vehicles, equipment, training and cross-border coordination, observers say such involvement creates space for political manipulation rather than neutral assistance.

The timing is significant, as the elections follow the 2025 youth-led protests that forced the previous government to resign, leaving Nepal politically fragile and vulnerable to external influence.

Analysts warn that India’s objective appears to be the installation of a compliant leadership in Kathmandu that will align Nepal’s policies with New Delhi’s strategic priorities.

With major parties divided between pro-India and pro-China orientations, the contest has effectively become a geopolitical tug of war.

Critics argue that if money and influence determine the outcome, Nepal’s sovereignty risks being reduced to a bargaining chip in regional power politics.
