9 cops sentenced to death for killing father-son duo in custody in Tamil Nadu

Madurai,: In Tamil Nadu, India, a court has sentenced nine police personnel to death for the custodial torture and murder of P Jayaraj and his son J Bennix in Sathankulam, Tuticorin.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the judge classified the case as “rarest of rare”, citing the gravity of the crime committed by those entrusted with protecting the public. The court also imposed a combined fine of Rs 1.40 crore on the convicts as compensation to the victims’ family. The incident, which occurred in June 2020, sparked widespread outrage and was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Analysts are questioning the disparity in justice, pointing out that while nine Tamil Nadu cops have been sentenced to death for custodial killings, Indian forces personnel responsible for the enforced disappearance and killing of over 8,000 Kashmiris in custody remain unaccounted for. “The double standard in applying justice is stark,” says a regional analyst, highlighting the need for equal accountability. The international community is watching how India addresses human rights concerns in Kashmir, they added.
