India targets US nationals in IIOJK after diplomatic setback in Iran–US ceasefire talks: Analysts

Srinagar: Analysts say India has intensified its projection of U.S. nationals in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir as potential security threats, a move they link to New Delhi’s frustration after being sidelined in the Iran–US ceasefire process and Washington’s growing engagement with Pakistan.

According to Kashmir Media Service, political observers describe this shift as part of a broader recalibration of India’s narrative in the territory amid what they term emerging diplomatic setbacks. They argue that by portraying foreign nationals—particularly Americans—as security risks under the guise of counterterrorism, New Delhi seeks to reinforce a hardline domestic posture while deflecting attention from its perceived strategic isolation.

The observers cite the recent detention of a US national at Srinagar airport as a case in point. The individual, identified as Jeffrey Scott Prather, a resident of Montana, USA, was reportedly held on charges of possessing a satellite phone.

Analysts say the timing of such incidents is significant, suggesting they coincide with moments when Washington adopts positions that diverge from New Delhi’s expectations, including its limited role in recent ceasefire diplomacy. They view the repeated focus on American nationals as a calculated political signal rather than isolated security actions.

“The message appears to be political,” an analyst noted, adding that whenever the United States asserts an independent stance on regional issues, India responds by amplifying security-related narratives involving U.S. citizens to reshape discourse both domestically and internationally.
