DSP dies of gunshot at official residence in Indian Punjab

Chandigarh: A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Indian Punjab died after sustaining a gunshot injury at his official residence in Chandigarh, officials said.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the deceased officer, identified as Yogesh Kumar, was posted with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force and had recently been transferred to the Bureau of Investigation just three days ago.

Initial reports suggest that the incident occurred while the officer was at home with his family. He was immediately shifted to a private hospital in Jalandhar, where doctors declared him dead.

The firearm is believed to have discharged while the officer was cleaning his service weapon, though the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

A senior police officer, who visited the scene, said statements of family members are being recorded as part of the investigation. Some reports also indicated that the officer had been under mental stress in recent days; however, there has been no official confirmation in this regard.

The body has been sent to a civil hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain whether the incident was accidental or self-inflicted. Authorities said all angles are being examined and further findings are awaited. KMS-4K
