Congress slams Modi’s silence on Israeli military operations in Lebanon

Says PM’s ideological affinity with Israel overrides India’s strategic, economic stakes

New Delhi: The Congress has strongly criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for maintaining silence over Israel’s military operations in Lebanon, saying he has placed ideological affinity with Israel above India’s strategic and economic interests.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, said the ongoing Israeli military actions were undermining efforts to secure a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in West Asia through US-Iran negotiations.

Ramesh said a successful outcome of the talks could help ease tensions in the region, facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and contribute to a reduction in global oil prices, developments of vital importance to India’s economy and energy security.

“Negotiations continue between the US and Iran to bring a halt to the war in West Asia. However, they have not reached a conclusion, primarily because of Israel’s continuing military operations in Lebanon, which have witnessed unprecedented incursions,” he said.

The Congress leader noted that several countries have expressed concern over Israel’s actions, but Prime Minister Modi has chosen to remain silent. He questioned whether Modi’s ideological affinity with Israel outweighed India’s strategic and economic stakes

The criticism comes amid growing concerns within India over the government’s foreign policy approach towards the ongoing conflict in West Asia, as regional instability and rising energy costs continue to have significant implications for the country’s economy.
