Dalit youth assaulted, dragged by tractor in yet another caste violence case in Modi’s India
Jaipur: In a shocking incident that has renewed attention on persistent caste-based violence in Modi’s India, a young Dalit man was stripped, brutally assaulted and dragged behind a tractor in an attack in the BJP-ruled Rajasthan state.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the victim, identified as Pawan Meghwal, belongs to the Dalit community, one of the most marginalized sections of Indian society that has historically faced discrimination and social exclusion under the caste system.
In his police complaint, Meghwal said he was sitting at a local shop when the attacker forced him onto a tractor before taking him to an isolated location. There, he was stripped, tortured and forced to consume alcohol before being subjected to severe beating.
The victim further said that the assailant tied him to a tractor and dragged him along the ground, causing serious injuries. He also said that his gold chain and cash were stolen during the attack.
Despite his injuries, Meghwal managed to contact his relatives, who later informed police. Authorities said the accused was detained and questioned following the complaint, although details regarding the charges have not yet been made public.
The incident has reignited concerns over the persistent violence, humiliation and discrimination faced by Dalits across India despite constitutional guarantees of equality and legal protections against caste-based atrocities.
Civil rights advocates have long argued that such incidents reflect deeply entrenched caste prejudices that continue to shape social relations and impede equal access to justice in many parts of India.
