Voter list revision threatens constitutional rights of citizens: JUI-Hind chief

New Delhi : Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani has said the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists threatens the basic democratic and constitutional rights of citizens.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Maulana Madani said the exercise is forcing millions of citizens to make repeated visits to government offices, gather numerous documents, and endure severe mental stress, with no assurance their names will remain on electoral rolls. He warned that the current SIR appears fundamentally different in nature and methodology, and could become a new version of the National Register of Citizens.

Maulana Madani said that under its cover, attempts are underway to deprive genuine citizens of voting rights, with Muslims reportedly disproportionately targeted in several states.

Madani urged citizens, especially Muslims, to proceed with vigilance and keep documents ready, and said Jamiat would provide legal assistance to ensure no one is deprived of constitutional rights.
