CPI (M) to protest in Srinagar on August 5 against abrogation of IIOJK’s special status
Srinagar: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has announced a protest on August 5 against the revocation of the special status of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The BJP-led Indian government revoked the territory’s special status on August 5, 2019, by abrogating Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution.
According to Kashmir Media Service, addressing a press conference in Kulgam, CPI(M) IIOJK Secretary Mohammad Abbas Rather said party workers would hold a peaceful demonstration at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk on August 5 to protest India’s unilateral decision to abrogate the IIOJK’s special constitutional status.
“The decision was not acceptable to us then, and it is not acceptable to us now,” Rather said.
He said that the protest was aimed at reminding people across India that the move was imposed unilaterally without the consent of the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Rather said the Indian government had not only revoked the territory’s special status but also bifurcated the historic state into the two Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. “We have never accepted this decision and will continue to oppose it through democratic and peaceful means,” he added.
