Police book Meta India head over Facebook posts targeting PM Modi
Hyderabad: Police in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad have registered a case against the head of Meta India over videos posted on the company’s Facebook platform that allegedly depicted Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an abusive manner.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the case was registered by the Cyber Crime Police following complaints over multiple videos shared on the social media platform. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crimes) V. Aravind Babu said the authorities are preparing to issue a notice to Meta Platforms in connection with the case.
The development marks the latest episode in a series of tensions between the BJP-led Indian government and Meta over online content related to Indian PM Modi.
Earlier this week, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology summoned Meta executives after Facebook briefly restricted a post by Modi. The post, his first public remarks on the massive student protests that led to the resignation of India’s Education Minister, was later restored. Meta said the restriction was inadvertent and attributed it to an error.
The latest case comes amid growing online criticism of PM Modi, with social media platforms witnessing a surge in posts, satire and protests targeting the BJP-led government’s handling of the nationwide student unrest.
