Statehood denial biggest betrayal of Kashmiri people by BJP: Sadhotra

Srinagar: National Conference Additional General Secretary and former minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra has termed the continued denial of full statehood to Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir the “biggest betrayal” by the BJP.
According to Kashmir Media Service, addressing a public meeting in Jammu North, Sadhotra said the prolonged Union Territory status had undermined the democratic aspirations and dignity of the Kashmiri people. He said assurances to restore statehood given in Indian Parliament and before the Supreme Court remained unfulfilled despite elections and delimitation already being completed.
Sadhotra said the elected government’s mandate must be respected and alleged that the BJP’s “authoritarian attitude” was creating hurdles in governance through dual control and uncertainty over division of powers.
“Statehood is about the rights, dignity and democratic voice of the people. It cannot be reduced to a political slogan,” he said, adding that clear institutional authority was needed for development in tourism, agriculture, horticulture, industry and employment.
He said the NC would continue to pursue restoration of full statehood through democratic and constitutional means.
