BJP leaders embroiled in corruption, extortion scandals in IIOJK
Srinagar : Allegations of corruption, extortion and misuse of political influence have surfaced against leaders and workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, exposing growing internal disputes within the party.
According to Kashmir Media Service, police have booked BJP Pulwama president Showkat Ghayoor for demanding Rs 5 lakh from a contractor through threats and intimidation. The complainant, Mohammad Yaseen Ganie, revealed that Ghayoor repeatedly obstructed his work, threatened him with action under the draconian Public Safety Act and demanded illegal gratification as a condition for allowing the work to continue.
Ganie further alleged that he had paid Ghayoor Rs 54,000 in two instalments under pressure and intimidation.
In a separate development in Islamabad district, a suspended BJP worker, Afdal Waheed, has disclosed that party leaders had sought around Rs 8.25 lakh in the name of jobs, permissions and other opportunities. He alleged that the money was sought for securing positions such as Special Police Officer (SPO) posts and MY Bharat-related work, besides permissions and accommodation during the Amarnath Yatra.
Waheed said he had submitted a complaint to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and demanded a proper investigation into the allegations and the whereabouts of the money.
The twin controversies involving BJP figures in Pulwama and Islamabad have brought renewed attention to allegations of extortion, financial irregularities and abuse of political influence within the party’s organisational structures in IIOJK.
