Mehbooba questions whether India has lived up to Constitution’s vision
Says founding vision envisaged freedom, equality and justice for all
Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has questioned whether India has fulfilled the vision of its Constitution after eight decades.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mehbooba made the remarks while speaking to reporters in Srinagar.
Responding to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for political parties to support implementation of women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies, she urged the BJP-led government to reflect on whether the constitutional vision of India had actually been realized.
“The BJP government should think if, after 80 years, it has realised the dream of India as envisioned in the Constitution,” she said.
Mehbooba pointed out that Indian Parliament had already passed the women’s reservation bill in 2023 and said it only needed to be implemented.
She said India’s founding leaders had envisioned a country where people would have freedom to choose their attire and food without discrimination.
Referring to the Indian Constitution drafted under the leadership of B R Ambedkar in consultation with the political leadership of the time, Mehbooba said as against the Modi regime’s way of doing things, the constitution envisaged no discrimination on the basis of caste, creed or colour and guaranteed justice for all.
