Protests against paper scandal continue across Chennai

Chennai: Protests against paper scandal continued in Chennai despite the Tamil Nadu Assembly passing a resolution opposing the exam, with campaigners demanding complete abolition of the centralised medical entrance test.

According to Kashmir Media Service, two separate agitations are ongoing in Tiruvottiyur and Egmore. In Tiruvottiyur, former IRS officer Balamurugan has been on an indefinite hunger strike since July 27. He is demanding NEET exemption for Tamil Nadu, restoration of education to the State List, and has also called for the resignation of CJI Surya Kant and Indian Home Minister Amit Shah. His brother Manirathnam urged the state government to provide medical care and a designated protest venue.

In Egmore, the OG Tamizha collective has held a 24-day daily sit-in at Thayagam Complex. Protesters, including educationist Prince Gajendra Babu, are urging Governor R.N. Arlekar to approve the Assembly resolution. Health Minister K.G. Arunraj told the Assembly that NEET favours students who can afford coaching and disadvantages rural and poor students. An earlier 2024 Bill seeking NEET exemption did not receive presidential assent.
