Modi govt saffronizing education as RSS affiliates join NCERT panel

Opposition slams move, says govt playing with country’s future

New Delhi : India’s Opposition has strongly criticized the BJP government over the reconstituted Textbook Development Team tasked with preparing Political Science textbooks for Classes 11 and 12 under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Opposition said the government had included people affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the team, adding the move amounted to playing with the future of the country.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Member of Parliament Manoj Kumar Jha questioned the inclusion of RSS-affiliated individuals in the process of developing educational material.

“You are including the very people and organizations that have destroyed the education system. Have you understood what the new education policy seeks?” he asked, saying the policy should promote a transparent examination system, create employment opportunities and ensure and inclusive education system.

Jha said the inclusion of people trained in Nagpur, the RSS headquarters, showed that the government was openly pursuing its own interests and “playing with the future of the country.”

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said he was not surprised by the development, stating that the RSS and BJP were seeking to gain control over all institutions in the country.
