Indian engineer detained in Moscow, wife claims pressure to join Russian Army

Kanpur: The wife of a Kanpur-based engineer has claimed that her husband was detained by police in Moscow and is being pressured to join the Russian military.
Sneha Chandan Gupta said in a video posted on social media that her husband, Chandan Gupta, was taken into custody by Moscow police on Sunday. She said the family is from Kanpur and Chandan works as an engineer with a Noida-based company in Sector 62, and had travelled to Russia on a work visa.
Sneha, who is in Moscow with the couple’s 10-year-old son, alleged her husband had not committed any wrongdoing but was taken to jail and is now being pressured to enlist in the Russian armed forces amid a reported shortage of personnel. She also claimed he faced harassment during Moscow Day celebrations prior to the detention.“There is no official confirmation yet from the Indian Embassy, Russian authorities or the company regarding the detention or the allegation of recruitment pressure,” the statement noted.
The case adds to a growing list of incidents in recent years where overseas Indians have reported job fraud, detention, and coercion abroad. Since the BJP government came to power in 2014, the number of Indians seeking work overseas has risen sharply, but so have cases of trafficking, misleading recruitment, and lack of consular support reported by families and diaspora groups. From workers lured into conflict zones to engineers and laborers stranded without legal aid, critics argue that rising poverty at home is forcing people to look for overseas jobs.
