APHC-AJK condemns action against Afzal Guru’s family, Shabir Shah’s bail denial
Safi urges global bodies to protect rights of Kashmiri political prisoners
Islamabad: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir (APHC-AJK) chapter has strongly condemned the action against the family of Shaheed Afzal Guru and the rejection of bail for senior Hurriyat leader Shabir Ahmad Shah.
Authorities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) demolished structures, including a dairy unit, linked to the family of Shaheed Mohammad Afzal Guru near Stadium Colony in Baramulla. The demolition was carried out under the pretext of an anti-encroachment drive. The structures were owned by Afzal Guru’s wife and relatives. Afzal Guru was hanged at Tihar Jail in Delhi on February 9, 2013.
APHC-AJK Convener Ghulam Muhammad Safi, while presiding over a meeting in Islamabad, said that action against Afzal Guru’s family was aimed at creating fear and panic among the families of Kashmiri martyrs and political prisoners.
He said that following Afzal Guru’s martyrdom, his family had legal inheritance rights to the property under Islamic law. He urged the United Nations, the UN Human Rights Council, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and international human rights organizations to take notice of the matter and play their role in protecting the rights of the affected family.
The meeting also strongly condemned the rejection of bail for Shabir Ahmad Shah. The APHC-AJK leaders said that the 74-year-old leader had been imprisoned in Indian jails for years and, in view of his deteriorating health, should be provided with proper medical facilities.
Ghulam Muhammad Safi urged international human rights organizations to take steps to ensure the protection of the rights of Kashmiri political leaders and activists detained in Indian jails.
