Delhi wears military garrison look after heavy deployment of forces

IIOJK-style suppression tactics reach Indian capital under Modi

New Delhi: The Indian capital, New Delhi, continues to wear the look of a military garrison as the Modi regime has extended the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in the city till October 20 to suppress ongoing protests.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Home Ministry took the decision on Tuesday after reviewing the situation, as protests against vote theft and demands for removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar show no signs of relenting.

Of the 301 CAPF companies currently deployed, the Delhi Police has sought extension for 273 companies till October 20.

Initially, 221 companies comprising around 23,000 personnel were deployed till October 12 for the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest against alleged vote theft, which later rose to 301 companies.

Security officials admitted that maintaining restrictions around key areas such as Connaught Place and the New Delhi municipal zone for an extended period could prove difficult.

After the Supreme Court directed the government to allow public access to these areas housing offices, business establishments and financial institutions, blockades in place till October 11 were eased.

In a letter to the Home Ministry on October 12, the Delhi Police said there was a possibility of participation of other political parties, including the Bhim Army, and student unions in protests in and around Parliament House, Election Commission headquarters and other key installations.

The heavy deployment of paramilitary forces, barricades and restrictions across the capital has exposed the real face of the so-called largest democracy, where dissent is being muzzled through military might. The opposition has accused the MOid regime of turning New Delhi into a fortress and reflecting the same oppressive policy pursued in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
