70-year-old woman murdered inside home in Pulwama

28-year-old missing labourer found dead in Indian state of Punjab

Srinagar: A 70-year-old woman was murdered by an unidentified attacker inside her home in Pulwama district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning.

An unidentified person entered the house during morning prayers and slit the throat of 70-year-old Jani Begum with a knife, resulting in her death on the spot in the Parigam area of Pulwama district.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident and launched an investigation to identify the assailants and ascertain the circumstances surrounding the murder.

In another incident, two persons, including 55-year-old Riyaz Ahmad, died after being hit by a Tata Mobile vehicle in the Kralgund area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, while another person was killed and three others were injured after rocks reportedly slid during ongoing construction work on the Sawjian-Gulmarg road in Poonch district on Monday.

A large rock slid onto workers engaged in construction work on the road leading from Sawjian towards Gulmarg, killing a labourer working with the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) and seriously injuring three others.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. In a separate incident, the body of a 28-year-old labourer from Kokernag, who had been missing since September, was found in the Indian state of Punjab and brought to his native village on Monday, with his family and local residents staging a protest demanding a thorough investigation into his death.

The deceased, Aijaz Ahmad Dar, was a resident of Darpora, Hallpora, Gadool in Kokernag, officials said. According to officials, a missing report was lodged on September 26 after Dar left home for labour work. His family said he had travelled to Srinagar around 20 days before contact was lost and stayed there for about 10 days before leaving for Ludhiana in Punjab in search of work. They said they remained in regular telephone contact with him for about a week, after which his mobile phone was switched off and they were unable to reach him.

The family said Dar was the brother of seven sisters. They also expressed concern over the condition of his face, which they said was damaged, and demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. They called for the death penalty for anyone found guilty.

After the body was brought to his native village on Monday, family members and local residents staged another protest outside Police Station Kokernag, saying that Dar had been murdered and demanding a thorough investigation into the case
