UP woman faces rape threats for defending Muslim couple

Noida: A 23-year-old woman, Soumya, has received rape and death threats after she intervened when a drunken man harassed a Muslim couple over the woman’s hijab in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the man, identified as Mukesh Kumar, claimed to be a police officer, demanded identity cards, and snatched the couple’s bike keys to stop them from leaving. Soumya confronted him, saying even police have no right to stop civilians and demand ID without cause. After the video went viral, Soumya faced severe online abuse. Trolls called her “Mulli”, accused her of being Muslim, and sent abusive messages, including questions like “how much she charges.”

She said the issue was a man harassing a woman at night, not religion, and plans to file a police complaint over the threats. Her ordeal highlights rising communal abuse on social media in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, where defending victims can draw vicious backlash.
