Uttar Pradesh police arrest two Muslim youths on cow slaughter charges

Lucknow: In yet another incident reflecting the continued targeting of Muslims under the BJP-led Hindutva regime, police in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have arrested two Muslim youths in Bareilly district on charges of cow slaughter.

According to Kashmir Media Service, police arrested Mohammad Khan and Aqeel-ud-Din from the Izzat Nagar area. Police claimed to have recovered 40 kilograms of meat, an electronic weighing machine and a knife from their possession.

It is pertinent to mention that since the Hindutva Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 2014, Muslims in India have increasingly faced discrimination and persecution. Demolitions of Muslim homes, mosques, madrasas and shrines on various pretexts, mob lynchings, arbitrary arrests and prosecutions on allegations of cow slaughter have become a recurring feature under BJP rule, drawing criticism from human rights organizations and civil society groups.
