UN, OIC urged to intervene over plight of Kashmiri detainees in Indian jails
Islamabad: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir (APHC-AJK) chapter has urged the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), international human rights organisations and the global community to take immediate notice of the deteriorating condition of Hurriyat leaders and thousands of Kashmiri detainees held in Indian prisons.
According to Kashmir Media Service, senior APHC-AJK leader Syed Faiz Naqshbandi in a statement said India had detained political leaders, Hurriyat activists, journalists, lawyers, human rights defenders and civil society members under the draconian Public Safety Act (PSA) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in an attempt to suppress the Kashmiris’ legitimate struggle for the right to self-determination.
He said the detainees were being denied medical care, family visits and fair trial rights, describing the situation as a violation of international human rights laws and the Geneva Conventions. He urged the UN, OIC, European Union and global human rights bodies to take effective steps to ensure the protection and immediate release of Kashmiri detainees and to hold India accountable for its international human rights obligations.
