Two separate protests held in Srinagar against power tariff hike in IIOK
Srinagar: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party staged separate protests in Srinagar against the increase in electricity tariffs, denouncing the regime for burdening people with further economic hardships instead of providing the relief promised during elections.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protests were held after the occupation regime approved an average 6.83 per cent increase in retail electricity tariffs for consumers in the occupied territory. The revised tariffs will come into effect from September 1, 2026.
The PDP protest was held outside the party headquarters in Srinagar, where leaders and workers carrying placards and banners strongly opposed the tariff hike. They said people had expected relief but were instead being pushed deeper into financial distress through higher electricity bills and what they described as inflated smart-meter billing.
The protesters also questioned the authorities’ failure to honour its pre-election commitments regarding free electricity, saying the latest tariff increase had further eroded public confidence in the ruling dispensation.
A separate protest by the Apni Party was held at Press Enclave in Srinagar, where participants raised slogans and displayed placards against the revised tariffs.
The protesters demanded immediate withdrawal of the tariff hike, warning that increased electricity charges would place an additional burden on ordinary households already struggling with rising prices and economic difficulties.
