Girl dies of gunshot under mysterious circumstances in Reasi
VDG-linked firearm angle emerges in probe into girl’s mysterious death

Jammu: An 18-year-old girl died after sustaining a gunshot injury under mysterious circumstances at her residence in Panassa area of Thakrakote block in Reasi district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
The deceased has been identified as Priyanka Devi, daughter of Kapoor Singh and a resident of Panassa, Thakrakote. Initial reports said she allegedly sustained the fatal gunshot injury at her home late Sunday night.
Following the incident, family members rushed her to District Hospital Reasi, where she was provided emergency treatment. Owing to the critical nature of her condition, she was referred to Government Medical College Jammu for specialised treatment, but she succumbed to her injuries while being taken to Jammu, according to a local report.
Preliminary reports have described the incident as an apparent suicide, but the motive and circumstances have not yet been established.
The incident has raised questions about the circumstances in which the firearm was discharged inside the residence. Given the presence of Village Defence Guards (VDGs) in the area, investigators are also expected to ascertain whether the weapon belonged to a VDG member or was otherwise illegally held by someone in the family, as part of efforts to establish how the firearm came into the victim’s possession and the exact circumstances that led to her death
