Water shortage triggers road blockade during women sit-in protest in Srinagar

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, women from Basant Bagh, Habakadal and Kralkhud areas of Srinagar took to the streets on Saturday over acute water shortage, blocking the road in Kralkhud and disrupting vehicular movement.

Residents said prolonged disruption in water supply has caused severe difficulties for households, forcing women to come out on the road to draw attention to the crisis.

The road blockade led to disruption of traffic in the area as protesters demanded immediate intervention from the Jal Shakti Department and restoration of adequate drinking water supply.

The protest comes amid continuing water-supply problems in parts of Srinagar. The occupation administration had recently acknowledged intermittent disruptions in areas including Basant Bagh, Ganpatyar and adjoining localities, attributing them to fluctuations in raw-water availability and treatment constraints at the Rangil Water Treatment Plant. It had said the affected areas fall at the tail-end of the distribution network.

The protesters urged the authorities to take immediate measures to address the shortage and ensure a regular and reliable supply of drinking water to the affected localities.
