Asaduddin Owaisi slams BJP for harassing Muslim women voters
Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi has slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for demanding verification of women voters wearing burqas, saying that the saffron party is targeting Muslim women and creating obstacles in the voting process.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a post on X, Owaisi said, “The BJP’s demand for special verification of women in burqas is a clear attempt to harass and target Muslim women. This is not the first time the party has tried to create obstacles for Muslim women voters. During the recent Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, their candidate publicly insulted and harassed Muslim women.”
Owaisi pointed out that the Election Commission has clear rules and regulations for verifying voters, regardless of their attire. “Why is the BJP making a special demand for Muslim women? It’s clear they want to target and harass them,” he said.
The statement came after a delegation from the Delhi BJP met with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), demanding special verification of women voters wearing burqas or face masks.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against BJP candidate Madhavi Latha for violating electoral rules by checking voter ID cards at a polling booth.
Delhi is currently undergoing voting in a single phase for all seven Lok Sabha seats, with a fierce contest between the BJP and the INDIA bloc, comprising the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress. The counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on June 4.
