Congress accuses BJP of pre-Panchayat poll violence in Tripura

Tripura: Indian opposition party Congress and its Tripura chapter lashed out at the Modi-led ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the alleged violence ahead of the three-tier panchayat polls slated to be held in the state on August 8.

According to Kashmir Media Service, as per the announced schedule, 6,370 seats in 606 Gram Panchayats of the state, 423 seats in 35 Panchayat Samiti and 116 seats in eight Zilla Parishad bodies will undergo polling on August 8.

Speaking to the reporters at Udaipur in the Gomati district, Tripura Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha said the BJP is trying to ‘reduce the panchayat polls into a farce”. Saha was on a visit to the Gomati district office that was set on fire allegedly by the BJP-backed cadres.

“The BJP is trying to create unrest in the state keeping the three-tier panchayat poll in the forefront through violence. They are trying to create a fearful environment to prevent the Congress from participating in the polls. They are trying to reduce the polls to a farce. Surprisingly, no action has been taken from the side of the police and administration so far,” said Saha.

Regarding the murder of the CPI(M) panchayat poll candidate, he said, “He was killed for being a candidate from the CPI(M) party. There is an attempt to win the poll through these murders and create unrest in the state. The role of the chief minister, who is also in charge of the home department, is unacceptable”.
