Indian SC grants bail to Manish Sisodia after 17 months in jail
New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India today granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia, who had been incarcerated for 17 months in connection with the Delhi excise policy cases.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Sisodia, the former deputy chief minister of Delhi, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on February 26, 2023, and later by the Enforcement Directorate on March 9, 2023, in a money laundering case stemming from the CBI FIR.
A bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan granted Sisodia bail in both cases, subject to a bond of Rs 2 lakh and the surrender of his passport. The court’s decision overturned the Delhi High Court’s earlier order denying him bail.
The Supreme Court criticized the delay in the trial, stating that Sisodia had been denied his “sacrosanct right” to a speedy trial. The court rejected the ED’s argument that the delay was due to applications filed by Sisodia himself, emphasizing the importance of a timely trial.
