Mystery surrounds Sheikh Hasina’s whereabouts amid Bangladesh seeks clarity
Dhaka: Bangladesh’s interim government is seeking clarification on the whereabouts of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who left the country on August 5 after her 15-year rule ended due to a popular student-led movement.
Dhaka has reached out to India and the UAE, but both countries have remained tight-lipped about her current location.
Speculation is rife, with social media posts suggesting Hasina may have left India for a third country, possibly the UAE. Bangladesh’s foreign affairs adviser, Md Touhid Hossain, confirmed that they’ve reviewed these reports but couldn’t verify them ¹.
“We inquired with Delhi and the UAE, but no one provided official confirmation,” Hossain stated. “We’ve seen social media posts suggesting she’s in Ajman, UAE, but we couldn’t reconfirm it.”
The speculation gained momentum after alleged sightings of Shamim Osman, a close aide of Hasina, at UAE’s Ajman City Centre and Delhi’s Nizamuddin Shrine.
Hasina’s departure from Bangladesh was swift, with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stating she requested approval to come to India “at very short notice” for her safety. KMS-8K
