Trump threatens India with reciprocal tariffs
Washington D.C: US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose reciprocal tariffs on India if it continues to charge high tariffs on American products.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Trump named India, Brazil and China as countries imposing high tariffs on certain US goods, citing India’s 100% tariff on some products as an example.
“The word reciprocal is important… if India charges us 100%, do we charge them nothing for the same?” Trump asked, emphasizing that the US would respond with equivalent tariffs. He also mentioned that India charges high tariffs on American goods, such as bicycles, saying “they charge us 100 and 200% tariff”.
Trump’s comments align with his “America First” trade policy, prioritizing fairness and reciprocity in trade relations. His administration plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that tax American goods, with Commerce Secretary pick Howard Lutnick echoing this stance.
This move could potentially escalate into a trade war, affecting bilateral trade between the US and India, which exceeded $120 billion in FY24.
