Delhi HC orders medical treatment for incarcerated JKLF chief Yasin Malik

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court today directed the Tihar Jail authorities to ensure that necessary medical treatment is provided to the illegally detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik, who has been on a hunger strike since November 1.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta issued a notice to the Indian government, Delhi administration, and Tihar Jail authorities in response to a plea seeking urgent medical care for Yasin Malik. The court also sought a detailed health status report of the detainee. The Delhi High Court has scheduled the next hearing for November 11,

Yasin Malik’s legal counsel informed the court that Malik’s hunger strike had been ongoing for over a week and that he urgently needed to be hospitalized due to his deteriorating health.

“Issue notice. Let a medical status report of the petitioner be called from the jail superintendent. Further, keeping in mind the submissions made by the counsel for the petitioner, the superintendent is directed to ensure that necessary medical treatment is provided to the petitioner in accordance with jail rules,” the court ordered.

In his plea, Yasin Malik’s counsel highlighted his client’s deteriorating health and the life-threatening nature of his conditions. He stressed that Malik, a prominent political figure, was being denied adequate medical care despite his grave health concerns.

In May 2022, Yasin Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi trial court in a fake case. Following this, India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed an appeal to the High Court, seeking the enhancement of Malik’s sentence to the death penalty.
