Tharoor questions Delhi’s suitability as capital amid alarming pollution

New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has criticized the Indian government for failing to tackle Delhi’s worsening air pollution, which he described as making the city “uninhabitable” for three months each year.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in a post on X, Tharoor highlighted that Delhi’s air quality is nearly five times worse than Dhaka, the second-most polluted city globally. Labeling the situation “unconscionable,” he questioned whether Delhi should remain India’s national capital. Tharoor pointed to his past efforts to address air quality, including stakeholder discussions since 2015, but lamented a lack of progress.

Tharoor’s remarks come as Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) hit a season-high of 493, prompting the Supreme Court to reprimand authorities for delays in enforcing pollution control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Schools in Delhi-NCR have shifted to online classes.
