Manipur crisis: Congress blasts Modi govt, demands Amit Shah’s resignation
New Delhi: The Congress has intensified its attack on the BJP-led Indian government over the ongoing violence in Manipur, demanding the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah and calling for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the strife-torn state.
According to Kashmir Media Service, during a press conference in Delhi, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said that the BJP government has failed to address the crisis in Manipur, describing the “double-engine government” as derailed. Ramesh stated that the Home Minister is directly responsible for the situation, saying, “We want the Home Minister to resign because it is his responsibility.”
The Congress also called on Modi to personally visit Manipur before the upcoming Parliament session. “Since May 3, 2023, Manipur has been burning, but the Prime Minister has traveled to various countries, giving sermons, yet he has not found time to visit the state. Our first demand is that the PM should take time to visit Manipur before the Parliament session begins and meet with political leaders, civil society groups, and those in relief camps,” Ramesh said. Additionally, the party urged Modi to meet with an all-party delegation from Manipur and convene a broader all-party meeting at the India-level to discuss the issue.
Ramesh further criticized the handling of the crisis, saying Modi has outsourced the responsibility for Manipur to Amit Shah, who, along with Manipur’s Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, has failed to restore peace. “Why has the Home Minister not acted on the CM’s failures, and why has he been attempting to shield him?” Ramesh questioned.
The Congress set a deadline of November 25, ahead of the Parliament session, for the Modi government to take these necessary steps.
